Sharon Thomas with the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office presented the Spencer County Fiscal Court their Tax Settlement Report at the meeting on July 17.

The amount signed for through the end of September was $16,550,058.75, which included 9,636 tax bills.

According to Thomas, 99% of the taxes were collected through the Sheriff’s office before being handed over to the County Clerk’s office on April 15.

Of the total money received, $9,831,469 went toward the school district, $1,108,814 went to the county, with $294,944 going into the Sheriff’s fee-pool account for commissions.

Other county entities that receive funds from this are the two fire districts and the Watershed, among others.

The court voted unanimously to approve the report, so it can be sent to the State.

Courthouse Security Plan

Spencer County Judge Executive Scott Travis discussed the plans of having another metal detector put into the courthouse to cover the back entrance.

On court days, every one going into the building will have to go through one of the metal detectors, and all other doors besides the front door will be locked.

Travis also discussed the usage of the elevator in the courthouse. It will be locked and unlocked between his office and the County Clerk’s office, depending on who uses it first and last.

Park slides quotes

Two of the slides on the playground equipment at Ray Jewell Memorial Park are broken, and quotes were submitted to the court at the meeting.

Even though the price tag was much higher than everyone expected, the court unanimously voted to purchase two new slides at a cost of $10,441, which does not include installation.

Safety of the children using the playground equipment was the number one reason for the approval, with the much higher cost of replacing the entire playground being the other. The installation will be taken care of by county employees.

Public Works makes new hire

The court voted unanimously to hire Jonothan Rice for a Full-Time Public Works position at $17 per hour. Rice will report directly to Solid Waste Coordinator Karen Spencer, and will be used “wherever he is needed.”
