The Dodgers fell to the Red Sox 8-5 in the second game of the series in Boston last night. Julio Urias allowed six earned runs including three home runs, and the offense never put enough together to overcome that. The Dodgers will attempt to win the series in this early morning east cost game with Caleb Ferguson opening. It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but Gavin Stone was recalled and it seems likely he will get the bulk of the game if everything works out well. The Red Sox will counter with the right-handed Tanner Houck on the mound.

Austin Barnes will be starting behind the plate today as Will Smith takes a day off. Smith seems to have been overworked and Barnes has improved enough to be playable. The team will run out their left-handed heavy lineup against Boston today. Miguel Rojas, Barnes, and obviously Mookie Betts are the only three right-handed batters in the starting lineup.

Ferguson is just in there as a first time through the order guy. He’s making his fourth start of the year, and has allowed one run total over his other three starts. He’s allowed four earned runs in 7.2 innings in August, allowing a .400/.462/.486 slash.

Meanwhile, Houck is making just his second start after recovering from injury. He was hit in the face by a comebacker two months ago, and returned last week against the Astros. He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He threw just 69 pitches last outing, although he’s likely ready for more than that today.

The Dodgers have recalled RHP Gavin Stone and optioned LHP Bryan Hudson.

Stone was recalled and Bryan Hudson was optioned to Oklahoma City.

Also…Joe Kelly won’t be this week’s homestand. His arm is still bothering himYency Almonte is also still a couple weeks awayWalker Buehler did an up/down yesterday. Timeline for a rehab assignment remains TBD, but Roberts believes a mid/late-Sept return is still possible

Not great news for the team or Tony Gonsolin. When he’s healthy he’s great, and the team would be better with him next season. Hopefully it’s all fine.

Additionally, there are a few more updates on Joe Kelly, Yency Almonte, and Walker Buehler.

#Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen tossed a scoreless fifth inning for Oklahoma City today. He faced four Isotopes batters, hitting the first batter he faced before retiring the next three. He threw 11 pitches (seven strikes).

Blake Treinen might make it back in September, but with Treinen the Dodgers are generally conservative (there’s a joke here somewhere).

First pitch is at 10:35 AM PT on SNLA and MLB Network.
